We were greeted like old friends and shown to one of the few spare seats available by a member of staff who then fetched us croissants and coffees. Another member of staff, noting the baby and the potential for disruption, kindly moved our seats on the train to a carriage where we were guaranteed a table for four with no one opposite.

His dishes for Eurostar are top-notch and it's such a pleasure to eat a meal on a train with proper cutlery. And on the return journey it was an aperitif of champagne before we enjoyed beef cheek in red wine with sauteed potatoes; cod roulade with paprika, citrus bulgar wheat and fennel salad, and apple and vanilla cheesecake with blackberry coulis for desert. All very tasty with perky flavours and quality ingredients.

Ah, yes, the old days - when First Class meant Champagne and foie gras and chocolates. In that case it may be worth it wor the wider seats. On the other had you mght find yourself across the aisle from a group of loud business travellers. From: www. Standard Premier offers first class seating with more affordable but inflexible fares for upmarket leisure travellers, or budget-conscious business travellers. Although confusingly including the word 'Standard' in its brand name to help attract business travellers whose companies don't officially allow first class travel, make no mistake, this is indeed first class!
First class leisure passengers in Standard Premier and first class business travellers in Business Premier are accommodated in separate first class carriages but the seating layout is the same in both types of first class, with a spacious '2-abreast-aisleabreast configuration across the width of the train. Tracie, food is not included at all in 2nd class. Is there a meal at all anymore in the other classes?
I've had good meals in 1st class with champagne, etc. The trip is just over 2 hours now, so comfort is not really a factor. On the Eurostar website, they say standard premier has a "light meal" served at your seat. Although I agree with you completely that the trip is too short to justify the need for bigger seats.
